Iraqi protesters demand for independent PM

Thousands of protesters have flooded the streets of southern Iraq, demanding the appointment of an independent prime minister.

Demonstrators blocked roads and public buildings as the deadline to announce an interim leader looms. At least 425 people have been killed and thousands more injured since the uprising began in October.

The country’s outgoing Education Minister is a top candidate, but is being rejected by demonstrators.
